Step 1
Obtain a strong sense of the English language. Practicing law involves a great deal of reading and writing and having the skill to read and report effectively will be invaluable in any law degree. You will also need to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and strong communication skills are incredibly important for that.

Step 2
Get a technical or scientific undergraduate degree. When you become a patent attorney this will assist in understanding certain patents and inventions that future clients will need representation for. There are many scientists who choose to become patent attorneys, as well as many engineering majors.

Step 3
Take Trademark Law and Copyright courses while attending law school. International patent information and regulations need to be fully understood in order to succeed as a patent attorney.

Step 4
Pass the Bar exam. In order to become a patent attorney, you will need to be certified to practice law.

Step 5
Sit for the Patent Bar. Every person wishing to become a patent attorney will be required to take the Patent Bar exam. This test can be taken without having received a law degree, but the Patent Bar would then only allow you to be a Patent Agent instead of an attorney.
